DHL, a global leader in logistics, has reported a significant 6.8% increase in airfreight volumes for 2024, reflecting the continued expansion of global trade and resilient supply chain demand. Despite challenges in other divisions, this growth highlights the strength of DHL’s air cargo operations and its ability to adapt to evolving market conditions.
A Year of Expansion for DHL’s Air Cargo Operations
DHL’s airfreight division played a key role in driving overall revenue growth, which rose by 3% to reach €84.2 billion in 2024. The surge in air cargo volumes was fueled by increasing demand for e-commerce logistics, pharmaceutical shipments, and high-value freight solutions across international markets.
“This strong growth in our airfreight operations reflects our strategic focus on expanding capacity, optimizing logistics networks, and enhancing service efficiency,” said a DHL spokesperson. “As global trade continues to evolve, we remain committed to delivering flexible and innovative air cargo solutions.”
Financial Performance: Growth Amid Operational Challenges
Despite the boost in airfreight volumes, DHL’s overall operating profit (EBIT) declined by 7% to €5.9 billion in 2024. The decrease was attributed to rising operational costs, including higher wages, fuel expenses, and logistical disruptions in certain markets. The Post & Parcel Germany division, in particular, faced headwinds due to declining letter volumes and increased labor costs.
To counterbalance these challenges, DHL has launched a cost-saving initiative aimed at reducing expenses by over €1 billion by 2027. A key part of this restructuring plan includes a reduction of approximately 8,000 jobs in Germany by the end of 2025, representing around 4% of positions in the Post & Parcel division. DHL has emphasized that these reductions will occur primarily through natural attrition rather than forced layoffs.
Future Outlook: Strengthening Strategic Sectors
Looking ahead, DHL projects an operating profit of over €6 billion for 2025, slightly below analyst expectations. The company is placing a strong emphasis on high-growth sectors such as pharmaceutical and healthcare logistics, as well as e-commerce fulfillment, to sustain long-term profitability.
Investments in digital transformation and sustainable logistics practices remain at the core of DHL’s future strategy. The company continues to explore cutting-edge solutions in automation, artificial intelligence, and carbon-neutral shipping to enhance operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
A Strong Position in Global Logistics
As DHL navigates an evolving logistics landscape, its airfreight division stands out as a pillar of strength within the company’s broader portfolio. The continued expansion of air cargo capacity, coupled with strategic cost management, positions DHL for sustained growth in an increasingly competitive market.
With the global demand for efficient, time-sensitive logistics solutions on the rise, DHL’s investments in airfreight innovation are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of supply chain management.
