In the dynamic ports of Alexandria and Port Said, Egyptian Customs is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at enhancing its expertise in the crucial area of rules of origin. This initiative, supported by the European Union and the World Customs Organization (WCO), is part of Egypt’s broader commitment to streamlining trade and customs procedures.
Decoding Rules of Origin for Trade Efficiency
The recent workshops (February 11-22, 2024) focused on the intricate world of preferential rules of origin. These rules are fundamental to Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and determine the eligibility of goods for preferential treatment. By mastering these rules, Egyptian Customs will ensure smoother trade flows and compliance with international trade agreements.
Brigadier General Mohamed Rashwan of the Egyptian Customs Authority highlighted the importance of these workshops in developing the skills essential for accurately applying rules of origin.
A Journey of Continuous Improvement
This latest series of workshops builds upon previous efforts; the initial step was taken in Cairo in September 2023. This ongoing collaboration demonstrates Egypt’s dedication to continuous improvement and capacity building within its Customs Administration.
By investing in its personnel and equipping them with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of global trade, Egypt is strengthening its position as a reliable trade partner and driving economic growth.
