FedEx Corp. and Dexterity Inc. have expanded their collaboration to deploy physical artificial intelligence systems for autonomous trailer loading at the FedEx Hagerstown Hub in Maryland, moving the project from pilot testing to full-scale operations.

The rollout follows several years of joint development, testing and operational validation. It marks a significant step toward integrating AI-powered robotics into one of the most physically demanding tasks in parcel logistics while improving safety, consistency and long-term network efficiency.

Trailer loading is a critical part of FedEx’s daily operations, with tens of thousands of trailers loaded each day across its U.S. network. The process requires physical strength, endurance and constant decision-making, making it one of the most difficult logistics tasks to automate using conventional technology.

Dexterity’s solution is built around Mech, a dual-armed humanoid robot designed for heavy industrial work inside standard commercial trailers. The robot is powered by Foresight, the company’s proprietary physical AI platform, which combines computer vision, depth sensing and tactile feedback to perceive its surroundings, make decisions and adapt to changing conditions in real time.

Using three-dimensional reasoning, the system determines the optimal placement of parcels to maximize trailer capacity, improve load stability and accelerate handling operations.

Beyond trailer loading, the collaboration is also evaluating how physical AI can integrate with broader logistics processes, including trailer assignment, destination planning, fleet maintenance and workforce management.

“FedEx has a long history of using technology to make our network safer, smarter, and more resilient,” said Kawal Preet, executive vice president of planning, engineering and transformation at FedEx. “This expanded collaboration with Dexterity reflects our commitment to advancing capabilities that improve how we operate today while helping prepare our network for the future.”

Dexterity founder and CEO Samir Menon said the Hagerstown deployment demonstrates that physical AI is now ready for large-scale logistics operations.

“Hagerstown represents an important milestone in demonstrating how physical AI can operate reliably in a high-volume logistics environment, creating a blueprint for network expansion,” Menon said. “This technology is not just a future promise; it can perceive, decide and act in the real world today.”

The Hagerstown project is expected to serve as a model for expanding physical AI across FedEx’s broader logistics network, combining autonomous robotics with human workers to improve operational efficiency, workplace safety and supply chain resilience.
