Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of the construction industry, and George Brown Polytechnic is adapting its programs to ensure graduates are ready for the changes taking place across the sector.
The Toronto-based institution has expanded the use of AI-powered learning tools and digital technologies throughout its construction, manufacturing and clean technology programs as companies continue to adopt smarter ways of planning, managing and delivering projects.
Today, employers are looking for professionals who are comfortable using tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, robotics and automation, while also understanding technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twins and predictive analytics that are becoming standard across construction projects.
Although the Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management does not offer a dedicated artificial intelligence degree, AI is increasingly integrated into many of its existing programs. Students regularly work with technologies that rely on machine learning, data analysis and digital modelling to support project planning, scheduling, budgeting and risk management.
Ontario’s Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, Nolan Quinn, recently said the school’s Master of Construction Management program will help equip students with the practical skills needed to lead major construction projects across the province.
George Brown offers several construction-related programs, including an Honours Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management, postgraduate Construction Management and Residential Construction Management programs, as well as a postgraduate Building Information Modeling (BIM) Management program.
According to the institution, these programs are developed alongside industry partners to reflect the technologies currently being adopted across the construction sector. As AI becomes more common in project management software, students are learning how data can be used to improve planning, optimize costs, reduce risks and support better decision-making.
For those looking to build stronger AI skills, George Brown also offers an Applied AI Solutions Development graduate certificate. The program covers machine learning, deep learning, data analytics, mathematics, computer science and business analysis, giving students the opportunity to develop AI models, analyze complex data and present insights through dashboards and visualization tools.
While the certificate is not focused exclusively on construction, the knowledge gained can easily be applied to the industry, from forecasting project schedules and improving productivity to enhancing site safety and supporting digital twin technologies.
The college has also introduced a Smart Manufacturing program that explores how robotics, automation and artificial intelligence are transforming industrial operations.
Students learn to configure smart sensors, build Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks and work with digital twins that simulate real production environments. The program also includes training in cybersecurity, AI-based data analysis and sustainable manufacturing practices to cut down on energy use, material consumption and waste.
George Brown also has shorter courses on machine learning and large language models.
The six-week Machine Learning 1 course teaches students the foundations of AI, Python programming and key machine learning techniques, and shows how they can be applied to real-world challenges.
Or how about AI and Language Models in Business Development, which examines conversational AI tools like ChatGTP. Students engage in practical exercises and analyze case studies to understand how companies are employing these technologies for process automation, enhanced customer engagement and increased operational efficiency. Those who succeed will receive a micro credential.
The college is also adding artificial intelligence to its training in renewable energy.
Solar Energy Technician and Solar Panel Installer students gain practical skills in a virtual environment through the use of AI-supported learning platforms and simulation software. Programs like 3DLab and CircuitLogix allow learners to design and test solar energy systems, troubleshoot electrical components and evaluate system performance in a variety of operating conditions.
The training covers photovoltaic systems, battery storage, solar farms, microgrids, maintenance, troubleshooting and safety, preparing graduates for jobs across the growing renewable energy industry.
