Kodiak taps IKEA to launch driverless freight on I-45

Kodiak AI is preparing to move IKEA freight without anyone inside the cab later this year, marking a new step in the autonomous trucking company’s long-haul deployment. IKEA Supply has been selected as the launch shipper for Kodiak’s driverless service, which will begin on a 219-mile section of Interstate 45 in Texas.

The driver-out operation will primarily connect Kodiak’s facilities in the Houston and Dallas areas. The segment forms part of an established 292-mile delivery route linking IKEA’s distribution center in Baytown with its store in Frisco.

The relationship between the two companies is already well established. Over the past four years, Kodiak has transported more than 1,300 IKEA loads and accumulated more than 750,000 miles operating autonomously with a safety observer in the cab, according to founder and CEO Don Burnette, who announced the latest development in a company post.

“Unsupervised driverless operations – no human in the cab – represent a milestone the entire Kodiak team has been tirelessly working toward since Kodiak was founded more than eight years ago,” Burnette wrote.

Kodiak identified the Dallas-Houston corridor as its long-haul driverless launch lane on Sept. 25. The company began its driverless long-haul launch program in August and said it is now consistently completing deliveries between its Lancaster, Texas, hub and Houston without human intervention.

According to Kodiak, the safety observer on those trips has never had to touch the steering wheel, including while the trucks were operating on surface streets.

Safety case remains the key step

Before the human leaves the cab entirely, Kodiak still needs to complete its highway launch safety case. The company describes that process as a structured, evidence-backed argument demonstrating that the Kodiak Driver can operate without a human aboard within a defined operating area.

Kodiak’s Autonomy Readiness Measure tracks the proportion of claims and evidence required for that safety case that are materially complete. At the end of August, the measure stood at 93% for long-haul operations, compared with 84% in February.

The company expects to reach 100% and begin driverless operations by the end of the year.

Kodiak already operates commercial driverless trucks for Atlas Energy Solutions in the Permian Basin, a program that began in December 2024. The companies expect that fleet to begin operating on public roads in early 2027, meaning IKEA freight could become Kodiak’s first driverless operation to reach a public highway.

Another piece of the deployment puzzle moved forward last week, when Kodiak and PrePass began routing inspection clearances from Kodiak’s driverless trucks into state weigh station systems in Texas and Louisiana.

Because a driverless truck cannot communicate directly with a roadside inspector, the CVSA Enhanced Inspection clearance is transmitted through PrePass and remains valid for up to 24 hours.

Four years of operational experience with IKEA

Kodiak’s IKEA operation has run seven days a week, “night and day, rain and shine,” Burnette said, describing the program as having an “impressive, nearly perfect on-time delivery record.” The company did not provide a specific on-time delivery percentage.

The four-year relationship has also given Kodiak operational experience that extends beyond autonomous driving technology. Burnette highlighted what he called “the little things that really matter,” including knowing when and where trucks should be launched, determining precisely when a vehicle will arrive in Frisco so unloading can be scheduled for a specific dock door, and using predictive maintenance data to build proactive maintenance plans.

Kodiak also sees long-haul autonomy as a way to change how human drivers spend their working time.

Burnette said the company’s focus on long-haul operations allows the human drivers who remain in the industry to concentrate on local work “that most prefer.” In his view, this could reduce the amount of time drivers spend sleeping on the side of the highway and allow them to spend more time at home with family and friends.

Kodiak said its driverless operations will continue with IKEA as well as with other customers following the launch.

“Mile by mile, we intend to build trust and gain traction until driver-out service is a routine and everyday part of the long-haul trucking landscape,” Burnette wrote.

The IKEA deployment would give Kodiak its first driverless long-haul service operating on a public interstate. Its progress will depend on completing the remaining portion of its highway safety case, which was 93% complete at the end of August, while its Atlas Energy Solutions fleet remains scheduled to move onto public roads in early 2027.
