Maersk Launches Real-Time Cargo Visibility Platform Built on Open Standards

COPENHAGEN — July 2, 2025
In a major step toward full cargo transparency, shipping and logistics leader Maersk unveiled a new real-time tracking platform this Tuesday, offering customers end-to-end visibility across ocean, inland, and warehousing operations — with data integration from external partners built into its core design.

Unlike previous tracking tools that only covered container milestones, the new platform — named “Maersk Flow Pro” — provides continuous location updates, condition monitoring, and estimated delivery windows across the entire supply chain.

“We’re not just offering a tool. We’re offering visibility as a logistics standard,” said Henrik Larsen, head of digital innovation at A.P. Moller–Maersk. “Customers shouldn’t have to log in to five platforms just to know where their cargo is.”

Why This Platform Stands Out

What differentiates Maersk’s new solution is its use of open APIs and third-party integrations. For the first time, customers can plug in tracking data from carriers Maersk doesn’t own — including air, truck, and rail freight — giving true multimodal oversight in one dashboard.

Early pilot clients report a reduction in exception-handling calls by 60%, and visibility gaps have been shortened from hours to minutes, particularly in ports and cross-docking warehouses.

“For our clients moving pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, knowing what’s happening minute by minute isn’t a luxury — it’s a requirement,” Larsen added.

IoT + AI for Risk Management

The system uses IoT sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, and shock exposure in real time, with AI-driven alerts for any deviation from pre-set thresholds. It also forecasts delivery delays based on weather, strikes, and port congestion, helping customers adjust plans proactively.

Maersk confirmed that over 25,000 containers are already equipped with the necessary smart devices, and the rollout will expand to 50% of its global fleet by early 2026.

Built for the Wider Ecosystem

To encourage industry adoption, Maersk announced it will publish the platform’s data standards later this year under a Creative Commons license, enabling suppliers and logistics partners to connect without costly custom integrations.

“We want this to be a tool that helps the entire logistics ecosystem move more efficiently,” said Eva Baumann, product manager for the Flow Pro team.

Analysts say this approach may pressure other global carriers and 3PLs to follow suit — especially as shippers continue demanding real-time control of inventory.
