In a major step to strengthen its operational backbone, Magma Aviation has entered into a multi-year unit load device (ULD) management agreement with Unilode Aviation Solutions, effective as of March. The partnership will streamline Magma’s global cargo handling operations through the integration of Unilode’s advanced digital ULD solutions and comprehensive asset support.
Headquartered at Gatwick, Magma Aviation operates a growing international air cargo network and manages a fleet of Boeing 747 freighters. With this new agreement, Magma gains access to Unilode’s vast ULD pool — the world’s largest — while adopting cutting-edge digital infrastructure to enhance real-time visibility and tracking across its supply chain.
Digital Efficiency Meets Global Scale
Unilode will manage approximately 3,500 ULDs on Magma’s behalf, providing full-service operational planning, 24/7 track-and-trace capabilities, and global maintenance and repair services. The scope of the partnership extends beyond standard leasing — integrating Unilode’s digital ecosystem that includes mobile applications, customer portals, and the industry’s most extensive tag-and-reader network.
Peter Kerins, CEO of Magma Aviation, highlighted the strategic importance of the move:
“As we embark on our new partnership with Unilode Aviation Solutions, we are confident that it will propel our growth. This agreement is not just about numbers and resources — it’s about building on our operational efficiencies to further enhance our services.”
Kerins emphasized that visibility and reliability are essential as Magma scales its services across key markets in Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
Innovation as a Service Differentiator
Unilode, widely recognized for its innovation in ULD tracking and management, views the partnership as a natural fit. Ross Marino, CEO of Unilode, expressed optimism about the collaboration:
“Our commitment to innovation, combined with the world’s most extensive tag and reader network — complemented by in-house developments like the eULD app and customer portal — ensures Magma benefits from the most advanced technology of its kind.”
This collaboration aligns with Magma Aviation’s long-term digital transformation goals, reducing manual processes and minimizing disruptions through data-driven asset monitoring and predictive analytics.
Outlook: Resilient Cargo Infrastructure for a Fast-Growing Airline
As global air cargo capacity remains constrained and demand for reliable freight services persists, partnerships like this one are increasingly critical. For Magma, the ability to scale efficiently without compromising service quality hinges on operational transparency and rapid responsiveness — both of which are enhanced by Unilode’s technology stack.
With the cargo airline’s ambitions firmly set on growth and agility, the strategic alignment with Unilode positions Magma to navigate complex global logistics with more precision and fewer delays.
