Menzies Aviation is trialing the application of artificial intelligence and computer vision technology at London Heathrow Airport to enhance cargo handling accuracy, efficiency and data-driven capabilities.
The airport services provider has launched a proof-of-concept program with CIND, a specialist in computer vision solutions for air cargo. The test will look at how operations can be improved from the moment shipments arrive at the warehouse until they are loaded on planes, through automated measurement, real-time visibility and digital build-up checks.
Automated cargo measurement
The first technology being deployed is CIND’s Dimensioner In-Motion, which measures freight as it moves through the warehouse.
The system collects important shipment data, such as pallet dimensions, weight, stackability and shipment references, without having to stop or manually handle the cargo.
Menzies is automating this stage to reduce manual data entry, minimize errors and provide more reliable information for downstream planning and cargo operations.
Real time ULD checks
Menzies is also trialing CIND’s ContourCheck during the build-up of the Unit Load Device (ULD).
The system provides real-time visualization of the cargo being loaded into a ULD and verifies the build-up against the approved aircraft contour.
This allows teams to see if there is a possible overhang or contour violation before loading, reducing the chance of last minute changes and helping to keep the aircraft safe to fly.
Toward more intelligent cargo operations
The Heathrow trial will look at how these technologies can improve the quality of cargo data, optimize available capacity and help make faster operational decisions.
The proof of concept could also provide useful information to Menzies Aviation for the wider deployment of AI-powered measurement and automated build-up verification across its cargo network in due course.
The initiative highlights the growing importance of AI, computer vision and real-time data in air cargo as handlers seek to reduce manual processes while improving efficiency and safety across the supply chain.
