A commercial vehicle stop on Interstate 69 near Marshall, Michigan, quickly escalated into a major criminal investigation after Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officers discovered approximately 368 pounds of suspected heroin and 174 handguns inside a semi-truck.

The stop took place at about 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, when officers pulled over the commercial vehicle near Marshall. What initially began as a roadside enforcement stop soon revealed a much larger issue.

According to Michigan State Police, officers found 92 bundles containing approximately 167 kilograms of suspected heroin, equivalent to roughly 368 pounds of narcotics. Investigators also recovered 174 handguns from the truck. Police said the firearms had their serial numbers obliterated.

Driver arrested following I-69 seizure

The male driver of the semi-truck was arrested after the narcotics and firearms were discovered. Michigan State Police cited violations involving both drugs and weapons in connection with the arrest.

Authorities have not publicly identified the driver. The case remains under investigation as officials prepare for an expected prosecution.

The seizure occurred near Marshall in Calhoun County, roughly 45 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. Interstate 69 is a major commercial corridor through southern Michigan, connecting the area with Indiana and continuing north toward the Canadian border. The route is regularly used by commercial trucks carrying regional and cross-border freight.

Michigan State Police withholds further details

Michigan State Police provided FreightWaves with the agency’s original announcement and authorized the publication’s use of its seizure photograph.

Investigators declined to provide additional details while the case remains active. Police said releasing further information could compromise the investigation or an anticipated prosecution. Authorities also cited the need to protect the safety of potential witnesses.

MSP has not released further information about the driver, the commercial vehicle or the circumstances surrounding the stop.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the seizure of the suspected heroin and firearms. FreightWaves said it will update the report if additional information becomes available.

Why the seizure matters

The incident highlights how commercial vehicle enforcement can uncover criminal activity extending well beyond routine equipment and safety checks.

In this case, a single traffic stop led authorities to what Michigan State Police described as a seizure involving approximately 167 kilograms of suspected heroin and 174 handguns with obliterated serial numbers.
