Migros, Switzerland’s leading food retailer, is set to expand its highly automated dry goods distribution center in Suhr by integrating 14 additional COM machines from logistics partner WITRON. This strategic enhancement aims to boost operational efficiency and meet growing demand.
Key Features of the Expansion
-
Increased Capacity: The new integration will enable Migros to automatically pick an additional 132,000 cases daily, elevating the facility’s peak capacity to over 560,000 cases per day.
-
Innovative Design: To maximize space, the expansion will be constructed atop the existing dispatch station, utilizing 7,000 square meters without the need for additional land.
-
Advanced Automation: The project, named “FOODTURA”, will incorporate:
- 14 fully automated picking machines
- 116,000 tray storage locations
- 28 stacker cranes
- 6 depalletizers
- 4 stretch-wrappers
These components will be seamlessly integrated over two levels, connected to the existing system via a compact conveyor network.
Strategic Benefits
Alexander Schweizer, Head of Engineering and IT at Migros Verteilbetrieb AG (MVB), highlighted that since mid-2011, the Suhr facility has been supplying over 700 stores with more than 315,000 cases daily using WITRON’s OPM system. The upcoming expansion is poised to further enhance cost-efficiency and customer satisfaction, aligning with Migros’ commitment to innovation and sustainability.
