MOOSE JAW, SASK. – Saskatchewan Highways Minister Kim Gartner recently announced that the estimated $35 million project to raise the clearance of the Highway 2 over Highway 1 overpass in Moose Jaw is now nearing completion.
The project involved demolishing the previous pair of Highway 2 bridges, which had been in service for roughly 60 years and provided a clearance of just 4.5 metres, according to a government release.
Beyond replacing the aging structures, the work also includes converting the former cloverleaf interchange into a diamond interchange. The redesigned layout is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce maintenance requirements and strengthen overall safety for motorists using the intersection.
Several final activities remain before the project can be considered complete. Crews still need to carry out final paving, fine grading and site restoration, with the entire project targeted for completion around mid-October.
Once the work is finished, traffic operations will return to normal. The new overpass will provide a clearance height of 5.3 metres.
The Moose Jaw-area project is part of a broader program of provincial highway investments in the region. Other projects currently underway or planned include:
Highway 2 north of Assiniboia
An estimated $13 million investment along Highway 2 between Assiniboia and Ardill will resurface more than 41 kilometres of roadway and include the installation of 12 culverts. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
Highway 13 in the Ogema area
The estimated $11.5 million Highway 13 project will involve repaving more than 25 kilometres, including the access roads leading into Pangman and Ogema. Gravel crushing began in early July, followed by road work later that month. Completion is expected by late fall.
Highway 1 east of Moose Jaw to Regina
An estimated $3.4 million investment is supporting more than 36 kilometres of pavement preservation work on Highway 1. A seal coat was completed in May, while micro-surfacing was underway and expected to be finished this month.
