DP World has launched its Beyond Boundaries Initiative in Africa for the first time.
The company unveiled its fifth repurposed shipping container of the global initiative, along with a donation of cricket kits for local youth, at an event at the South DP World Wanderers Stadium on Tuesday. The DP World Beyond Boundaries Initiative was initially launched with the support of the brand’s global ambassador and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar ahead of last year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.
This initiative aims to make cricket more accessible and empower communities worldwide through donations of cricket kits and equipment, as well as 50 repurposed containers that will serve communities where they are placed.
During last year’s World Cup, DP World pledged to deliver ten cricket kits for every 100 runs scored in the tournament, totaling over 2,500 kits pledged. An additional 250 cricket kits will be delivered via this container, with 50 going to Cricket South Africa and 200 to Lions Cricket. To date, over 1,000 kits have been delivered globally.
Mohammed Akoojee, DP World CEO and Managing Director for sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted South Africa’s status as a cricketing nation and emphasized the importance of making the sport more accessible. He expressed DP World’s commitment to supporting communities in need through this initiative.
Ayabonga Khaka, right-arm seam bowler of the DP World Lions and Protea Women’s Team, welcomed the initiative to the continent and expressed optimism about its potential impact on young cricketers in South Africa.
The repurposed container unveiled on Monday, which delivered cricket kits to children from Molalatladi Primary School in Soweto and MC Weiller School in Alexandra, will remain at the DP World Wanderers Stadium to serve as a donation bank for second-hand sports equipment. Jono Leaf-Wright, Lions Cricket CEO, expressed gratitude for DP World’s ongoing commitment to the cricket community.
This week marks a significant milestone for the Initiative, with another activation taking place in Delhi. As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies approaches in June, the Initiative will continue to expand its global reach.
