Ocean Network Express (ONE) has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 by securing Approval in Principle (AiP) for an Ammonia Dual-fueled vessel. This achievement, coupled with the investment in 12 methanol dual-fueled vessels, reflects ONE’s dedication to sustainable shipping practices.

The newly AiP-awarded 3,500 TEU vessel is the outcome of a joint development project initiated in late 2022 involving ONE, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY), and classification society DNV. This collaborative effort aligns with ONE’s exploration of alternative fuels, with a particular focus on the feasibility of ammonia as a lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emission option compared to conventional marine fuels.

As part of this initiative, ONE actively participated in a pilot safety study led by the Global Maritime and Transportation School (GCMD) to assess the viability of ammonia bunkering. The success of obtaining AiP for the ammonia dual-fueled vessel underscores the progress made by ONE and its commitment to ongoing research and development in the field.

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Regional Manager for South East Asia, Pacific & India, Maritime at DNV, expressed confidence in ammonia as a promising future marine fuel with the potential to significantly decarbonize shipping. DNV’s rules for ammonia are positioned to support customers in safely adopting this new fuel type once the necessary infrastructure is established.

ONE’s Green Strategy outlines an ambitious target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, encompassing Scope 2 and 3, by 2050. The transition from conventional fuels to alternative fuels serves as a key pillar in ONE’s green initiatives. The company remains dedicated to studying and embracing alternative fuels, reinforcing its commitment to realizing a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050.
