Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) has proudly launched its latest addition to the fleet, the “OOCL Bauhinia,” during a ceremonial event at the Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (DACKS) shipyard. This milestone marks OOCL’s first NeoPanamax container vessel, representing a significant step in its fleet expansion and modernization efforts.

Specifications of the OOCL Bauhinia

The “OOCL Bauhinia” is a cutting-edge NeoPanamax vessel designed to meet the needs of modern global trade. Key specifications include:

  • Capacity: 16,828 TEUs
  • Dimensions: 366.99 meters in length, 51.0 meters in width, and 30.2 meters in depth
  • Design Draft: 14.5 meters, enabling passage through the expanded Panama Canal

Equipped with advanced eco-friendly technologies, the vessel emphasizes energy efficiency and compliance with stringent environmental standards, aligning with the global push for sustainable maritime operations.

Symbolic Name Reflecting Heritage

Continuing OOCL’s tradition of naming vessels after flowers, the “Bauhinia” is named after Hong Kong’s city flower. This choice highlights OOCL’s deep-rooted connection to Hong Kong, a key global shipping hub, and underscores the company’s pride in its heritage.

Deployment on the Trans-Pacific Trade Route

The OOCL Bauhinia is set to serve the Trans-Pacific Trade PCC1 route, connecting major ports in Asia and the U.S. West Coast. The rotation includes Ningbo, Shanghai, Pusan, and Long Beach, completing a 42-day round trip. This deployment will enhance OOCL’s capacity to meet growing trade demands while providing reliable and efficient service.

Strategic Vision and Industry Impact

As the first of ten 16,000 TEU vessels ordered by OOCL, the Bauhinia symbolizes the company’s commitment to fleet modernization and environmental sustainability. The vessel also highlights the broader industry trend of investing in larger, more efficient ships to address increasing trade volumes and environmental challenges.

A Commitment to Sustainability

OOCL’s investment in the NeoPanamax class reflects its dedication to reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable development in the shipping industry. Beyond the Bauhinia, the company has also placed orders for seven 24,000 TEU methanol-compatible vessels, further demonstrating its commitment to environmentally conscious operations.

Looking Ahead

The unveiling of the “OOCL Bauhinia” reinforces OOCL’s position as a leader in the maritime sector, combining innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. As global trade continues to grow, this vessel will play a pivotal role in meeting the evolving needs of shippers worldwide.
