Greek owner Venergy Maritime has signed a contract with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding for the construction of two 158,000 dwt Suezmax crude tankers, with options in place for two additional vessels of the same type.

The agreement, signed on 1 April, marks Venergy Maritime’s first shipbuilding order with Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.

For the Chinese yard, the deal represents an important step in broadening its international client base. For Venergy, it forms part of a wider fleet renewal and expansion strategy focused on Chinese shipyards.

The company has already been active elsewhere within the CSSC group. Earlier, Venergy placed an order for four 1,900 teu feeder container vessels at Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding. That contract, initially agreed as a 2+2 order in December 2025, became a firm four-vessel programme after both options were declared in February 2026.

Venergy has also expanded on the tanker side through Jiangsu New Times Shipbuilding, where it ordered 4+2 LR2/Aframax product tankers of 113,500 dwt. Deliveries for those vessels are scheduled from 2029 onward.

The latest Waigaoqiao contract underlines the owner’s rapid growth in China across both crude tanker and container vessel segments.
