Prakash Joshi, a respected construction materials specialist from Surrey, British Columbia, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, recognizing more than 50 years of contributions to materials testing, quality control and innovation within Canada’s construction industry.

Joshi was among 61 new appointments announced by the Governor General on June 26. His official citation recognizes his work in advancing materials testing and quality inspection, particularly through the development of innovative testing methods for emerging construction technologies.

Speaking after the announcement, Joshi admitted he initially questioned whether the notification email was genuine and even asked his company’s IT department to verify its authenticity before sharing the news with his wife.

Because recipients are required to keep the honour confidential until the official announcement, he said the excitement had to remain private.

Once the appointment became public, Joshi’s first act was to pay tribute to his mother.

He recalled touching her feet as a sign of respect, after which she encouraged him to visit a temple and give thanks—advice he immediately followed.

From Uganda to Canada’s construction industry

Joshi was born in Uganda to a family whose roots are in Gujarat, India. He credits his upbringing and family values for shaping his career and desire to help others.

One of Joshi’s first life lessons came from his grandfather, who took him to visit a leprosy colony. The experience, Joshi said, changed his perspective significantly on compassion and service.

Forced to flee Uganda at the age of 20 during the Idi Amin regime, Joshi eventually settled in British Columbia graduating from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 1976 with a diploma in chemical and metallurgical technology.

Over the next 50 years he built a distinguished career, first spending 30 years with Amec Earth & Environmental before joining Metro Testing and Engineering where he is currently a Senior Materials Engineering Technologist.

“Throughout his career, Joshi has witnessed remarkable progress in construction materials, particularly in concrete technology.

He points to innovations such as modern chemical admixtures, advanced hardening methods and the growing use of shotcrete, a sprayed concrete often enhanced with silica fume to improve durability and performance.

In the 1990s, Joshi also became the first professional in his field to receive a Professional Limited Licence from Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).

To obtain the licence, he developed and presented his own professional scope covering materials testing, quality inspection and forensic investigations, establishing a new pathway for specialists working outside traditional engineering disciplines.

His career has included involvement in several landmark transportation projects. After participating in testing for the original SkyTrain system built for Expo 86, he is now overseeing quality control testing of precast concrete guideway segments for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension.

Passion for mentoring internationally trained professionals

Beyond his technical achievements, Joshi is widely recognized for mentoring internationally educated professionals seeking careers in Canada.

Since joining the board of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) in 2022, he has continued supporting newcomers through mentorship programs offered by EGBC.

He has also contributed to numerous professional and humanitarian organizations representing Punjabi, Nepali, Bangladeshi and Ugandan communities, as well as the international organization Initiatives of Change.

Helping internationally trained professionals establish careers in Canada remains one of the most rewarding aspects of his work.

A respected forensic investigator

Joshi has also earned a reputation as a skilled forensic materials investigator, frequently called upon to determine the causes of construction failures and workplace incidents.

In one case involving a worker who had been violently thrown into the air, microscopic examination revealed traces of brass, allowing Joshi to conclude that the incident resulted from equipment impact rather than a failure of the construction materials themselves.

The work has earned him the affectionate nickname “Inspector Clouseau” among colleagues.

A career driven by service

Joshi credits much of his success to his wife, Darshana, whom he describes as his greatest supporter and a dedicated humanitarian. Their home includes a temple that welcomes visitors of every faith.

His new book, Life in Four Continents, describes his travels to four continents and encounters with such prominent figures as the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu.

“It’s very meaningful recognition, but awards have never been my motivation,” Joshi said.

He says the desire to help others is a result of the values he was brought up with, noting that true compassion empowers people and injects positivity to create a lasting effect in other people’s lives.
