Qatar Airways Cargo has played a key role in global flower logistics this Valentine’s season by transporting 42 million fresh red roses, totaling 2,800 tonnes, from leading flower-producing regions in Kenya, Colombia, and Ecuador to major international markets.
A Massive Flower Airlift for the Global Market
To meet the seasonal spike in demand, Qatar Airways Cargo expanded its flower logistics operations:
- Kenya: Nearly 1,600 tonnes of roses were flown from Nairobi via scheduled and charter freighter flights.
- South America: Over 1,200 tonnes of flowers were transported from Bogotá (Colombia) and Quito (Ecuador) to major destinations, including Amsterdam, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
- Additional Charter Capacity: The airline operated nine extra freighter charters from Nairobi and ten from Quito, using its Boeing 777 freighter fleet.
Ensuring Freshness with a Dedicated Cool Chain
To maintain the quality and longevity of the flowers, Qatar Airways Cargo used its specialized “Fresh” product for temperature-controlled handling and seamless cold chain logistics. This guarantees that flowers reach florists and retailers in peak condition, ensuring customer satisfaction.
A Strategic Boost for the Floriculture Industry
Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo, highlighted the airline’s commitment to supporting the global flower supply chain:
“We are proud to play our part in sharing these premium roses with the world, while also supporting the local economies in Kenya, Colombia, and Ecuador. By providing reliable and efficient air freight solutions, we ensure that millions of people receive fresh flowers in time for Valentine’s Day.”
A Testament to Air Cargo’s Role in Global Trade
Qatar Airways Cargo continues to demonstrate the essential role of air freight in perishable logistics, delivering time-sensitive products efficiently across continents. With advanced fleet capacity, cold chain expertise, and a global network, the airline remains a top player in the floriculture supply chain.
