Ross Stores is set to significantly expand its distribution network with a new 1.75 million-square-foot processing and distribution center in Bakersfield, California, according to a press release from the City of Bakersfield.
The project represents a $500 million investment and will become Ross’ 10th distribution center across the United States. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the multiyear development projected to generate nearly 1,000 new jobs, according to the city.
Ross already operates a broad distribution network. Three of its existing distribution centers are located elsewhere in California, while additional facilities are based in Buckeye, Arizona, and Brookshire, Texas, according to the company’s website. On the East Coast, the retailer has one distribution center in Pennsylvania and two more in South Carolina.
Ross had not provided further details about the Bakersfield project by the time of publication.
The new facility comes as the retailer continues to pursue an aggressive brick-and-mortar expansion strategy. Earlier this year, Ross announced plans to open 47 new stores, comprising 35 Ross Dress for Less locations and 12 DD’s Discounts stores.
The company’s recent sales performance has also supported that expansion. In August, Ross reported that customer traffic helped drive a 10% year-over-year increase in second-quarter comparable sales, while total Q2 sales climbed 13% year over year, according to Retail Dive.
Ross is not alone in expanding its distribution infrastructure. Other retailers have also been investing heavily in logistics capacity as their store networks grow.
Off-price competitor Burlington, for example, announced plans this year for a high-tech distribution center in Georgia as well as another facility in Arizona.
Dollar Tree has likewise expanded its logistics footprint, opening a 1-million-square-foot distribution center in Arizona in May.
For Ross, the Bakersfield project adds another major piece to a distribution network that is evolving alongside the retailer’s continued store expansion across the country.
