SATS and Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore a strategic partnership focused on strengthening air cargo connectivity and reinforcing Panama’s position as a major logistics gateway for the Americas.

The agreement will see the two parties examine opportunities to expand cargo-related infrastructure and operations at Tocumen International Airport. This includes the development of cargo areas as well as air cargo handling facilities and operations within Tocumen Cargo City, in line with the airport’s master plan.

The potential partnership will also draw on SATS’ experience in global air cargo handling and its international network of more than 225 stations across 27 countries. This expertise is expected to support the development of trade flows through Panama and strengthen the airport’s role within international supply chains.

Building a stronger Asia–Americas cargo connection

The agreement brings together two hubs with important positions in global trade and logistics: Singapore and Panama.

By combining their respective strengths, SATS and Tocumen International Airport aim to deepen trade connectivity, establish new cargo flows and facilitate the growing movement of goods between Asia and the Americas.

The initiative is also linked to the future expansion of Tocumen’s cargo precinct. As the cargo platform develops, the partnership could contribute to the creation of new employment opportunities across the wider airport ecosystem.

Kerry Mok, President and Chief Executive Officer of SATS Ltd., highlighted Singapore’s experience in building a major trade and logistics hub through close cooperation across the aviation and supply chain sectors.

“Singapore’s development as a leading trade and logistics hub has been built on strong partnerships across the aviation and supply chain ecosystem,” Mok said.

He added that SATS’ experience across major cargo gateways, combined with its network of more than 225 stations in 27 countries, will support the company’s cooperation with Tocumen as Panama advances its logistics ambitions.

“Together, we will explore opportunities to strengthen cargo capabilities, improve the movement of goods and support growing trade between Asia and the Americas,” he said.

Tocumen seeks to expand its cargo platform

Jose Ruiz Blanco, General Manager of Tocumen International Airport, said Panama and Singapore occupy naturally strategic positions as gateways for global trade and connectivity.

Ruiz Blanco pointed to Singapore’s logistics development as an example of the value of maintaining a long-term vision for infrastructure and trade.

Having seen Singapore’s logistics development firsthand, he said he understood the contribution that this long-term approach had made to the hub’s growth.

The agreement with SATS, he added, provides Tocumen with an opportunity to explore new capabilities, reinforce its cargo platform and further expand trade connectivity between Asia and the Americas.
