The Shanghai Changxing Ocean Lab for marine equipment has officially launched as a flagship research platform for modern shipbuilding and advanced marine engineering technologies.
Developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the public research facility is designed to drive innovation in high-end marine equipment through a fully integrated system combining basic research, applied research, and industrialisation of scientific outcomes.
Located on Changxing Island in Shanghai, the laboratory features eight experimental building clusters and a science and innovation park as part of its overall structure. All five core functional zones of Phase I have now been put into operation, alongside a series of pilot industrial testing platforms that are already running steadily.
Over a five-year construction period, the laboratory has achieved multiple high-level breakthroughs in key areas including intelligent manufacturing, smart marine equipment, green power systems, and deep-sea engineering facilities.
The facility has now entered a new stage of development, supported by complete testing infrastructure, increasingly mature industrial innovation projects, and a clustered marine technology ecosystem. It is structured around three core strategic missions: supporting China’s national maritime power strategy, leading the high-quality development of the global marine equipment industry, and training specialised talent in marine science and engineering.
As China advances through its 15th Five-Year Plan period, the laboratory is expected to leverage its technological capabilities to accelerate the high-end transformation of the country’s shipbuilding and marine engineering sectors.
In parallel, the lab has signed strategic cooperation agreements with numerous key enterprises and research institutions. These partnerships will focus on building joint R&D centres, platforms for transforming scientific results into industrial applications, and demonstration production lines.
The collaboration network is expected to further strengthen China’s maritime development strategy while contributing to the expansion and upgrading of Shanghai’s marine industrial cluster, positioning the city as a key global hub for advanced ocean engineering innovation.
