EDMONTON – Design and engineering firm Stantec has appointed new leaders for two of its major North American business units, naming Jon Sylvie to lead its buildings practice and Kari Shively to oversee its water business.
Sylvie will lead a team of architects, engineers, designers and specialists responsible for delivering high-performance spaces across a broad range of sectors. These include advanced manufacturing, airports, arts and culture, civic and commercial projects, education, federal buildings, health, industrial facilities, mission critical facilities, science and technology, as well as workplace environments.
The buildings business employs more than 5,500 people across North America and has a net revenue target of $1.69 billion, according to Stantec.
Jon Sylvie will lead Stantec’s North American buildings practice.
A 21-year Army veteran, Sylvie brings more than 14 years of experience in architecture and engineering practice to the role. His background includes leadership in business development, project delivery, client relationships and team development.

Shively will assume responsibility for Stantec’s water business effective October 1. The water operation is among the firm’s largest and most diverse practices, providing planning, engineering, design and advisory services to communities and industries dealing with water supply, treatment, wastewater, stormwater, flooding and resilience challenges.
According to the company, Shively has more than 33 years of experience in the water sector. Her career includes a strong record of leading complex, multidisciplinary teams focused on the growing demands facing water infrastructure and water resources.
She has held a number of leadership positions at Stantec, covering project management, business development and growth, as well as operations.
Kari Shively will oversee Stantec’s water business from October 1.
In her new position as business unit leader for water, Shively will oversee 2,500 employees and a net revenue target of $970 million.
