Wegmans Food Markets is investing $110 million in its supply chain as part of a broader effort to expand capacity, strengthen operations and create long-term growth opportunities, the grocer announced in a Thursday press release. Wegmans press release.
A central element of the investment is a new refrigerated facility in Rochester, New York, Wegmans’ home market. The site is expected to support a range of perishable operations, including fresh produce, meat and seafood, deli products and restaurant offerings.
The company said the planned changes will also reduce its dependence on third-party providers while giving Wegmans greater capacity and more control over its supply chain activities.
As part of the restructuring, Wegmans plans to move its returns center operations from their current location on Winton Road in Rochester to a more modernized facility elsewhere in the city. Both the new returns center and the refrigerated facility remain in the planning phase, and construction and opening dates have not yet been finalized, according to the company.
Wegmans is also preparing to consolidate part of its distribution network. Its Winton Road general merchandise distribution center in Rochester will be consolidated into the grocer’s general merchandise facility in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The move is expected to take place in spring 2027.
The company said the changes will not result in layoffs. Wegmans added that it will work with affected employees throughout the transition, providing updates as timelines become clearer.
The investment reflects a broader trend among grocery retailers seeking to bring more logistics activity under their own control. Wegmans joins companies such as Sprouts Farmers Market and Ahold Delhaize USA, which are also expanding their self-distribution networks.
