BRUSSELS — August 25, 2025. In a decision that stunned small exporters overnight, several European postal operators have suspended parcels bound for the United States after Washington scrapped its long-standing $800 de minimis exemption.

The change means every shipment, no matter how small, now faces full customs clearance and duties. For online sellers and SMEs that thrived on frictionless cross-Atlantic trade, the impact has been immediate — and painful.

“We had customers waiting for $50 orders. Suddenly, the paperwork costs more than the product,” complained Anne-Sophie Laurent, owner of a small Paris-based craft shop. “We’ve had no choice but to pause U.S. deliveries.”

Chaos at sorting centers

Across postal hubs in Frankfurt, Brussels, and Milan, parcels piled up over the weekend as operators scrambled to adapt. Staff unions said confusion over tariff codes and missing digital customs data forced entire shipments to be returned to senders.

“This isn’t a slowdown, it’s a full stop,” noted Kurt De Vries, a senior logistics coordinator in Belgium. “Until systems are aligned, we simply can’t process these packages.”

Stocks react, shippers scramble

The fallout spread quickly to markets. Shares in several European courier firms dipped by 4–6% Monday morning, while logistics analysts warned of longer-term consequences for e-commerce players who rely on cross-border parcel traffic.

Some forwarders are now offering emergency alternatives via express carriers and consolidated freight, but costs are significantly higher. “The age of cheap cross-border shipping to the U.S. is over,” said Luca Martelli, senior analyst at Transport Observatory Europe.

A wider political undertone

The suspension isn’t just technical; it reflects growing trade tensions. U.S. officials argue the de minimis system had become a loophole for undervaluing imports, especially from Asia. But European SMEs say they are collateral damage in a fight they never picked.

Outlook

Talks between Brussels and Washington are expected in the coming days, though postal operators warn a fix will not be quick. For now, consumers in America waiting for European books, clothing, or artisanal goods may be left with empty mailboxes.
