Egypt takes a new step in its port power rise with the operational launch of its first semi-automated container terminal, located in Sokhna, on the Gulf of Suez. The project is based on a solid partnership between Hutchison Ports, CMA Terminals, and COSCO Shipping Ports, with the clear ambition of positioning the area as a strategic transit point between Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The official start was marked by the stopover of a ship operated by CMA CGM, a symbol of a launch designed to quickly integrate international flows. The terminal is part of a long-term concession agreement with the Egyptian State, and aims to enhance the country’s logistical performance: better productivity, smoother operations, and efficient handling of volumes.
Beyond the port tool, the challenge is economic: to offer Egyptian importers and exporters an infrastructure capable of supporting competitiveness, while meeting modern handling standards. In a context where maritime chains seek reliability and speed, Sokhna wants to become a credible and scalable hub on the Suez axis.
