IndiGo has confirmed that Willie Walsh will become its new chief executive, bringing one of the aviation industry’s most recognisable leadership figures into the top job at a critical point for the airline.
Walsh, currently Director General of the International Air Transport Association, is due to step down from IATA at the end of July and take up his new position at IndiGo in early August.
The appointment follows the resignation of Pieter Elbers after a period of regulatory criticism linked to operational failures and widespread flight cancellations in December. The disruptions, which were described as the most serious breakdown in the airline’s two-decade history, were tied to shortcomings in planning around pilot duty and rest requirements.
India’s aviation regulator subsequently rebuked the airline’s leadership, citing weaknesses in operational oversight and crisis management. In the immediate aftermath, co-founder and managing director Rahul Bhatia temporarily took executive control.
Despite those setbacks, IndiGo remains the dominant force in India’s domestic aviation market, with roughly two-thirds market share and a central role in one of the world’s fastest-growing air transport sectors.
Walsh brings decades of experience to the role. He began his airline career as a pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979, became chief executive of the Irish carrier in 2001, later led British Airways from 2005, and has served as IATA Director General since 2021.
For IndiGo, the move signals a clear attempt to restore operational confidence while relying on proven airline leadership to support the company’s next phase of growth.
