Japanese engineering company JGC has started developing a standardised design package for floating LNG (FLNG) units, aiming to significantly accelerate front-end engineering work and shorten overall project delivery timelines.

The package, which is expected to be finalised in fiscal year 2026, integrates Honeywell’s established LNG process technologies, including its dual-mix refrigerant system. According to the company, this approach could reduce the time from contract award to delivery by more than one year, depending on project scope and client specifications.

Unlike traditional FLNG developments, which are typically executed as fully bespoke projects, the new standardised model is designed to reduce post order engineering work and enable more modular, repeatable execution at lower cost.

The design combines Honeywell’s LNG liquefaction and gas pretreatment technologies with JGC’s own experience from one of the world’s largest FLNG developments, alongside a proprietary modular topside design optimised for high spatial density and production throughput.

The concept is primarily targeted at small- to mid scale FLNG projects, where schedule predictability and faster monetisation of offshore gas resources are becoming increasingly critical to project economics.

“By leveraging standardised designs and repeatable execution, we can deliver FLNG solutions faster and more cost-effectively, while supporting LNG projects in locations where onshore infrastructure is constrained,” a JGC spokesperson said.

The initiative is part of JGC’s broader medium-term strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of its EPC business, with a focus on deeper collaboration with technology partners and a stronger emphasis on cost efficiency and delivery performance.
