Hamworthy Returns as an Independent Marine Environmental Technology Specialist

One of the maritime industry’s most recognized environmental technology brands is making a comeback. Hamworthy has officially relaunched as an independent company following the sale of Wärtsilä Water & Waste to the Sweden-based investment group Solix Group.

The move marks the return of Hamworthy as a standalone specialist focused exclusively on marine environmental systems, with activities spanning water treatment, ballast water management, freshwater generation and onboard waste handling solutions.

While the ownership structure has changed, the company has stressed that customers will experience complete continuity in service. Existing contracts, engineering teams, technical expertise and support networks will remain fully operational throughout the transition.

Headquartered in Poole, Hamworthy will continue serving a broad range of maritime sectors, including cruise ships, merchant vessels, offshore units, naval fleets and other specialized marine operations.

At the same time, Serck Como, the freshwater generation division previously operating under Wärtsilä Water & Waste, will continue its activities under the name “Serck Como – A Hamworthy Business.” The company will maintain operations from its long-established base in Geesthacht.

According to Fraser Scott, the relaunch represents a new chapter for the business while preserving the expertise and customer support that have built its reputation over the years.

“Hamworthy represents the evolution of Wärtsilä Water & Waste as a focused independent specialist,” Scott explained.

He emphasized that customers will continue to benefit from the same engineering capabilities, operational support, installed-base knowledge and long-term lifecycle commitment that have characterized the business for decades.

The company believes its renewed independence will allow it to concentrate more directly on the growing environmental challenges facing the maritime sector. With international regulations becoming increasingly stringent, shipowners are under greater pressure to improve environmental performance and ensure compliance across their fleets.

Scott noted that operating as an independent specialist will enable Hamworthy to sharpen its focus on supporting customers through this evolving regulatory landscape.

“As Hamworthy, we now have an even clearer focus on helping customers operate with confidence in increasingly regulated marine environments,” he said.

The relaunch positions Hamworthy to strengthen its role in a market where environmental compliance, sustainable vessel operations and advanced water and waste treatment technologies are becoming increasingly critical for shipowners worldwide.
