Norfolk Southern Conductor Killed in Train Accident in Indiana

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation after a Norfolk Southern conductor was fatally struck by a passing train while performing an inspection in Whiting, Indiana.

A black train traveling down train tracks next to a forest ...A Norfolk Southern conductor lost his life after being struck by a passing train early Thursday morning in Whiting, Indiana, prompting an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The victim, identified as 57-year-old Scott Shoemaker of Toledo, Ohio, was working aboard an eastbound Norfolk Southern train when the accident occurred at approximately 3:52 a.m.

According to initial information, Shoemaker was standing alongside the tracks to inspect a westbound train as it passed when he was struck. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The NTSB has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the fatal accident.

Norfolk Southern offered its condolences in a statement after the tragedy.

“We mourn the loss of a valued member of our railroad family,” the company said. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time.”

The railroad also confirmed that it has been in contact with Shoemaker’s family and is providing support services to both his relatives and local employees affected by the incident.

Norfolk Southern reaffirmed that the safety of its employees and the communities it serves remains its highest priority as the investigation moves forward.
