The Government of Saskatchewan is urging Ottawa to partner on three major infrastructure projects that provincial leaders say will strengthen local economies, support growing communities and generate long-term regional benefits.

In a letter sent to Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Gregor Robertson, Premier Scott Moe formally endorsed three municipal projects seeking funding through the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) – Direct Delivery Stream.

The projects include:

  • Downtown Event and Entertainment District (DEED) in Saskatoon.
  • Prince Albert Convention and Cultural Event Centre in Prince Albert.
  • Battlefords Arena and Event Centre in North Battleford.

To help move the developments forward, Saskatchewan has committed to matching any approved federal funding, contributing up to one-third of each project’s eligible costs if the proposals receive federal approval.

Although provincial participation is not required under the BCSF Direct Delivery Stream, the government said it wants to actively support projects that are expected to deliver broad economic and social benefits across the province.

Premier Moe said the proposed developments reflect priorities shared by both Saskatchewan and the federal government, particularly in promoting economic growth and building stronger, more resilient communities.

He called on Ottawa to work alongside the province and participating municipalities to turn the projects into reality.

According to the provincial government, the investments would stimulate economic development, create new tourism opportunities, support housing growth and provide modern facilities that could also serve as emergency response centres during natural disasters or other major emergencies.

The province also emphasized that its financial commitment to these three initiatives will not reduce funding available for other Saskatchewan municipalities applying through the Build Communities Strong Fund – Provincial and Territorial Stream.

Negotiations between the provincial and federal governments are currently ongoing to finalize funding arrangements under that separate infrastructure program.
