Textron Aviation, a Textron company, and aerospace and defence technology firm Merlin have unveiled the Cessna SkyCourier UX, a new aircraft concept that combines the proven SkyCourier platform with Merlin’s aircraft-agnostic autonomous aviation software.
Presented at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference, the concept is intended to examine a cost-efficient and scalable approach to logistics in contested operational environments, where conventional transportation routes may be constrained, vulnerable or inaccessible.
The SkyCourier UX is being developed around the requirement to resupply dispersed forces when traditional supply networks cannot reliably reach them. By integrating Merlin’s autonomous aviation technology with the SkyCourier airframe, the two companies are assessing how autonomous cargo operations could add flexibility and resilience to military logistics.
Bob Gibbs, vice president, Defense and Special Mission Sales, said military planners are increasingly focused on sustaining forces across distributed and contested operational environments. He said the SkyCourier UX reflects Textron Aviation’s effort to explore practical answers to real-world mission requirements by combining certified aircraft with innovative adaptations.
Addressing evolving sustainment requirements
The SkyCourier UX concept was introduced at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference as military organisations show growing interest in sustaining forces operating from dispersed locations and increasingly complex environments.
At the centre of the concept is the twin-engine turboprop Cessna SkyCourier. The proposed aircraft would provide another option for transporting cargo and critical supplies during the final leg of military distribution networks.
As defence organisations operate farther from traditional supply hubs and face greater risks of disruption along established transportation routes, logistics resilience has become an increasingly important consideration. Recent trials involving autonomous and pilot-optional cargo aircraft, together with continued investment in autonomous resupply programmes, have highlighted rising interest in distributed sustainment capabilities.
The SkyCourier UX explores the role a medium-payload, fixed-wing aircraft capable of autonomous flight could play in that environment. Its objective is to offer what the companies describe as right-sized lift, giving commanders an additional cargo transport option while allowing larger mobility aircraft to remain available for higher-priority missions.
Designed to move cargo within a theatre of operations, the SkyCourier UX could also use unimproved runways. That capability could become particularly relevant for resupply missions where established infrastructure is unavailable, limited or disrupted.
Bridging the gap between drones and larger airlifters
The Cessna SkyCourier UX is being positioned between small tactical cargo drones and larger military transport aircraft. The concept is aimed at missions that do not require the capacity of a heavy airlifter but still exceed the payload capabilities of many existing autonomous cargo systems.
Built around the Cessna SkyCourier platform, the concept combines autonomous take-off and landing with substantial payload capacity, short-field performance and the flexibility to support intra-theatre distribution and expeditionary operations.
The project also examines how eliminating the onboard crew could allow aircraft configurations to be redesigned specifically around cargo missions.
One configuration currently being evaluated uses a forward-loading architecture in which conventional cockpit space is replaced with additional cargo capacity. The design would also feature direct access through a large nose opening.
Together with the aircraft’s kneeling capability and integrated loading systems, the proposed configuration is intended to make cargo easier to access, increase usable volume and support more efficient operations from austere locations.
Merlin CEO and founder Matt George said the future of contested logistics will demand greater cargo capacity as well as access to locations where sending crewed aircraft could involve higher risks.
George added that Merlin Pilot has already completed hundreds of autonomous flights on aircraft including Cessna Caravans and Beechcraft King Airs.
The company is now combining that autonomous flight technology with the established Cessna SkyCourier platform to investigate aircraft designs focused on autonomy and cargo rather than onboard crews.
According to George, bringing together established autonomy technology and a proven airframe could help advance more resilient capabilities for contested-logistics operations.
Merlin’s work will continue through engineering studies and evaluations designed to build confidence in autonomous and pilot-optional resupply operations.
Gibbs said the collaboration is also evaluating how autonomy could support more efficient cargo aircraft configurations, particularly designs that increase usable cargo volume, improve cargo accessibility and meet broader mission sustainment requirements.
Building on a proven aircraft platform
The SkyCourier UX concept is based on an FAA-certified aircraft already in production, giving the programme access to an established manufacturing system, a global support network and mature sustainment infrastructure.
That existing foundation could help support the evaluation and eventual deployment of autonomous and pilot-optional logistics capabilities while making use of established aerospace infrastructure and industrial capacity for scaled operations.
Under current design objectives, the Cessna SkyCourier UX light-lift aircraft is expected to carry approximately 6,000 pounds of payload and accommodate up to three LD3 cargo containers. It is also expected to retain the ability to operate from austere runways.
Potential missions identified for the concept include hub-to-spoke distribution, resupply operations for expeditionary bases, transportation of critical repair parts, delivery of medical supplies, and support for island and remote-airfield operations.
A model of the Cessna SkyCourier UX concept is scheduled to be displayed publicly for the first time at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference.
