The federal government is investing more than C$77 million to build a new multi-use small craft harbor in Arctic Bay, Nunavut, a major infrastructure project for the remote northern community.
Public Services and Procurement Canada has awarded the construction contract to Iqaluit-based Pilitak Enterprises Ltd. The deal also includes an Inuit benefits plan that aims to create opportunities for local training and employment, said the federal government.
Construction started in August and will extend to 2029. Once completed, the harbor is expected to be operational during the 2030 open-water season.
The project will involve construction of a range of new marine facilities for Arctic Bay. These will include a breakwater, launch ramp and fixed wharf capable of handling larger vessels. Float wharves will also be installed for smaller boats.
The works also include the dredging of the harbor basin and entrance channel to provide adequate access for vessels using the new facility.
The harbor is expected to be a key element in the economic and community activities of the region as well as upgrade marine infrastructure. It will be important to support commercial fishing and increase access to economic opportunities, cultural activities, marine transportation and tourism.
The project, already under construction, is planned to be a big boost to Arctic Bay’s marine infrastructure, with the new harbor set to open to users in time for the 2030 open-water season.
