LATAM Cargo Group is taking a new step in its approach to operational safety with the introduction of virtual reality (VR) training for warehouse personnel at its Miami hub. The initial deployment will involve around 550 staff, 250 of whom are forklift operators, and will utilise immersive simulations to assist teams in preparing for the risks and challenges they encounter in their day-to-day work.
The programme puts employees into a controlled digital environment mimicking the company’s actual ground infrastructure. Customised simulators allow staff to practice operational procedures, identify possible dangers, and respond to live situations without the risks of a live warehouse environment.
The simulators reflect specific areas and functions within the warehouse and were developed in conjunction with LATAM Group’s in-house training unit, Academia LATAM. The system comprises scenarios for six pedestrian zones and three specialised training modules for forklift drivers.
Procedures that have safety as their primary concern, such as separation of dangerous goods, cargo handling, management of pedestrian traffic and protocols for keeping personnel away from machinery, are emphasised throughout the curriculum. The simulations introduce employees to these procedures and test how they react to unexpected situations. Response times, ability to recognise, evaluate and reduce potential hazards are all measured.
The immersive methodology aims to improve situational awareness and close the gap between classroom training and the practical requirements of frontline operations, LATAM Cargo said. The company hopes that workers will get to practice critical situations in a simulated environment so they can reinforce safe working practices before they experience similar situations on the warehouse floor.
The Miami deployment is a follow-up to the earlier roll-out of VR-based onboarding at the Fast Air warehouse in Santiago. The latest phase expands the scope of the programme to cover a wider range of operational situations and to roll out the technology to a much larger workforce.
LATAM Cargo is also evaluating other important hubs in its network for the implementation of the VR training system, including facilities in Brazil. Any further rollout would extend the programme beyond its current locations, potentially bringing the same immersive training approach to other operations.
“Bringing virtual reality to our Miami hub is an important part of our operational safety strategy. Through putting our teams into critical operational scenarios in an exact replica of their day-to-day work environment, we are significantly bridging the gap between classroom theory and ramp practice. “This directly translates into safer and more efficient cargo handling for our customers,” said Daniel Leng, LATAM Cargo’s Chief Operating Officer.
