Trailer Bridge has appointed Charles Gittens as its next chief executive officer, effective November 2, as the Jacksonville-based carrier pursues further investment in its ocean transportation operations and services connecting the United States with Puerto Rico. The company announced the appointment on October 26.

Gittens succeeds Mitch Luciano, who left the company on October 1 after serving as CEO since 2015. His appointment comes at a pivotal stage for Trailer Bridge as it sharpens its focus on maritime transportation and continues modernizing its fleet and supporting infrastructure.

A new CEO with extensive Caribbean shipping experience

Gittens brings more than three decades of experience in transportation and logistics, with a background spanning Caribbean shipping, commercial strategy and business operations, according to Trailer Bridge.

Before joining the company, he served as president of trade at King Ocean Services, where he oversaw operations across the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Eastern Caribbean.

Earlier in his career, Gittens held the positions of president and chief commercial officer at Seacor Island Lines. During his tenure, he helped increase revenue by 115%, while expanding services and improving operational efficiency, Trailer Bridge said.

Eric Fabrikant, chairman of Trailer Bridge’s board, welcomed the appointment, highlighting Gittens’ industry knowledge and record of commercial and operational leadership in Caribbean markets.

In a statement, Fabrikant said the board remained confident in the company’s direction and that Gittens’ experience, combined with the capabilities of the existing team, would help position the business for long-term success.

Fleet renewal and operational investment

The change in leadership is part of a broader effort to bolster Trailer Bridge’s maritime operations. In 2025, the company sold its domestic logistics business as part of a strategy to focus on its ocean transportation business.

Recent initiatives include over $9 million in improvements to its roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) barges. The upgrades include onboard generators that will increase the capacity for refrigerated cargo, so the company can better handle temperature-sensitive freight.

Trailer Bridge has also upgraded its monitoring technology across its fleet and set up new long-term partnerships to support its terminal operations and tug services. These measures are part of its efforts to enhance operational capabilities and support its maritime network.

“I am looking forward to joining the company and working with a team that is known for its customer service and commitment to the markets it serves,” Gittens said.

He also cited Trailer Bridge’s long history in Puerto Rico, saying he plans to build on that foundation and work with customers and partners to help the business continue to grow.

An established operator in the Puerto Rico trade.

Trailer Bridge was founded in 1991 by transportation pioneer Malcom McLean and operates roll-on/roll-off and lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) barges in the Puerto Rico trade.

Its cargo portfolio includes containers, vehicles, heavy equipment, oversized freight and breakbulk shipments, giving the company the ability to accommodate a variety of transportation needs across its maritime network.

Why it’s important: Gittens steps in as Trailer Bridge focuses on ocean transportation operations following 2025 sale agreement for domestic logistics division. His appointment is coupled with investments in vessel capabilities, fleet monitoring and operational partnerships as the carrier seeks to strengthen its position in the Puerto Rico market and underpin its long-term growth.
