DP World, a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions, is setting a new benchmark for sustainable logistics across emerging markets, including South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. By integrating decarbonization initiatives and community empowerment programs, DP World is redefining the role of logistics in promoting sustainability.
Decarbonizing Port Operations
DP World is taking significant strides toward reducing its carbon footprint across its global operations:
- Brazil: At the Santos terminal, DP World has invested $16.2 million to electrify Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes, cutting diesel consumption by up to 60%. This is part of its commitment to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and 62%, respectively, by 2030, as aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
- Ecuador: The “Sembrando Vida” project has planted over 250,000 mangrove seedlings across 105 hectares, removing an estimated 2,460 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. This project not only mitigates climate change but also supports 400 local families by restoring critical ecosystems.
- Argentina: At Terminal Río de la Plata, 95% of operational energy comes from wind power, drastically reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing emissions.
Empowering Local Communities
Beyond environmental efforts, DP World is focused on empowering communities in emerging markets through education and development initiatives:
- Dominican Republic: The “Visión Futuro” program in Boca Chica equips at-risk youth with technical and vocational skills. Since 2021, it has trained 658 young people, enabling them to secure jobs or start businesses. Over 1,155 young women have benefited from life skills and leadership workshops, addressing gender-specific challenges.
- Suriname: Workshops for female employees promote professional growth and inclusion, aligning with DP World’s commitment to gender equality and workplace empowerment.
Commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
DP World’s initiatives reflect its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on climate action, gender equality, and economic growth. By integrating environmental sustainability with community empowerment, DP World demonstrates how logistics can drive meaningful, positive change in emerging markets.
A Model for Sustainable Growth
As global supply chains evolve, DP World’s innovative approach to sustainability sets a strong example for the industry. By balancing economic growth with environmental and social responsibility, DP World is not only enhancing its operational efficiency but also contributing to a more sustainable future for global trade.
