MOL Group has achieved a significant milestone by successfully producing Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) biodiesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at its Slovnaft refinery in Bratislava. This development aligns with the company’s SHAPE TOMORROW strategy, focusing on the advancement of alternative synthetic fuels.
Production Details
-
HVO Biodiesel: Utilizing oil derived from cashew nut shells, the refinery produced HVO biodiesel through a co-processing method, blending biocomponents with traditional crude oil. This approach has been previously implemented at MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta, effectively reducing emissions associated with conventional fuels.
-
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): The refinery also produced SAF by co-processing partially refined cooking oil with standard raw materials. This initiative positions Slovnaft among the select refineries globally capable of producing aviation fuel that meets stringent SAF quality standards.
Quality Verification
The produced fuels underwent rigorous analysis by the independent laboratory Isotoptech Zrt, confirming compliance with required quality standards.
Strategic Implications
These successful tests demonstrate MOL Group’s technological readiness to produce sustainable fuels, contributing to the energy transition and aligning with European Union environmental targets. The EU mandates that SAF should constitute 2% of total aviation fuel consumption starting this year, with progressive increases to 6% by 2030, 20% by 2035, and 70% by 2050. These regulations apply to all flights originating within the EU.
Gabriel Szabó, Vice Chairman of the Slovnaft Management Board and Vice President Downstream of MOL Group, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “The fact that Slovnaft has passed this test is a confirmation of our position as an important player in the CEE region.”
MOL Group’s commitment to sustainable fuel production not only enhances its competitive position in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region but also supports global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
