Construction is moving ahead on Calgary’s Green Line project after two major contracts were awarded for the development of its new Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF), a key part of the future light rail network.
PCL Construction has been selected to carry out the site’s early construction work, including grading, underground utilities and the building foundations needed for the facility’s main structures.
The maintenance complex will cover around 26,000 square metres across 2.25 hectares and will serve as the operational centre for the Green Line. It will be used to store, maintain and prepare light rail vehicles for daily service.
PCL’s work includes site preparation, drainage infrastructure, retaining walls, underground utility installation and foundation construction for the maintenance shop, train storage building and administrative facilities. The project also involves protecting existing utilities and installing embedded mechanical and electrical components needed for future construction.
Construction began in late May and is expected to finish later this year.
A second contract has been awarded to Supreme Steel LP, which will manufacture and install the structural steel framework for the facility’s three main buildings. The company, known for its work on Calgary’s Bow Tower, will begin fabrication later this summer, with steel installation scheduled to start in 2027.
Once completed, the Maintenance and Storage Facility will include a three-level maintenance shop, train storage tracks, service lanes, a train wash and cleaning facility, body repair workshops, component repair areas, parts storage and office space for operational staff.
The facility will play a central role in supporting the day-to-day operation of Calgary’s Green Line once the light rail system enters service.
