Egypt is moving forward with plans to enhance its port infrastructure, with the Ministry of Transport and the Alexandria Port Authority signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Xiamen C&D for the development of a specialized dry bulk terminal at Al-Max Port.
The project is part of the larger Greater Alexandria Port development plan and is expected to support the Sokhna-Alexandria industrial logistics corridor, which is a strategic link in Egypt’s industrial and transport network.
Under the cooperation agreement, the project will include the construction of two dedicated dry bulk berths with a range of modern infrastructure behind them. Facilities planned include standard cargo yards, storage silos, state-of-the-art cargo handling and transshipment systems, and a variety of logistics facilities to improve operational efficiencies.
The terminal will be able to take three large cargo ships at the same time when it comes into operation. This capacity is expected to increase the capacity of the Alexandria Port Area to receive and discharge large ships, to handle larger volumes of bulk cargo and to facilitate cross-border transshipment operations.
In addition to increasing the capacity of the port, the project will also enhance the links between the port area and Egypt’s railroad and highway networks. The objective is to develop an integrated multimodal transport system that connects maritime shipping with rail and road transport, and thus to strengthen cargo flows between ports and inland destinations.
Lyu Rongdian, CEO of Xiamen C&D, said they are confident about the prospect of Egypt’s port development. “The country has geographical advantages and potential for its maritime infrastructure.” The company will move forward with the construction of the project, with the objective of developing a leading dry bulk cargo logistics hub along the Mediterranean coast, he said.
