Port Everglades has completed its first LNG shore-to-ship bunkering operation, marking a new milestone for alternative marine fuel supply in South Florida.
The operation was carried out by Florida-based Sawgrass LNG & Power on 26 March 2026 and involved fuelling Ilma, a vessel from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.
The development is being viewed as an important step in expanding LNG availability as a marine fuel in the region and reinforces the port’s support for next-generation fuel solutions serving both cruise and cargo customers.
Neil J. Kutchera, assistant director of energy and innovation at Port Everglades, described the bunkering as a defining moment for the port and its partners. He said the availability of lower-carbon fuel for both landside and waterside delivery reflects a strong commitment to safety and sustainability.
Daniel McLaughlin, president and chief commercial officer of Sawgrass LNG & Power, said the company was deeply appreciative of the support received from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Port Everglades, the US Coast Guard Sector Miami, Broward Sheriff’s Office and REV in carrying out the operation. He said the achievement demonstrates a shared commitment to operational excellence and safety, and added that Sawgrass is looking forward to many more bunkering operations at the port.
The move comes shortly after Sawgrass LNG & Power signed a new LNG supply contract with Barbados National Energy Company Limited.
