The American Association of Port Authorities has appointed Sang Yi as its new President and CEO, effective May 4.
Yi joins the association after serving as Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Maritime Administration.
A reserve officer in the U.S. Navy and a licensed merchant mariner, Yi also brings extensive political experience, having spent nearly fifteen years working within the U.S. House of Representatives.
His appointment comes at a strategic moment for the American port sector, as the United States intensifies efforts to strengthen maritime infrastructure, supply chain resilience, and industrial competitiveness.
Chett Chiasson, Chairman of the AAPA Board and Executive Director of Port Fourchon in Louisiana, said Yi brings a deep understanding of both the economic and security challenges facing U.S. ports.
According to the association, the appointment is intended to strengthen the port industry’s representation at the federal level as maritime infrastructure investment becomes a growing national priority.
Yi is also part of a broader movement of former U.S. maritime officials transitioning from federal administration into private-sector and industry leadership roles.
A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Sang Yi also holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and a law degree from George Washington University.
In his first statements following the announcement, Yi emphasized the critical role ports play in American competitiveness and highlighted the importance of long-term infrastructure investment to support supply chains and employment across the United States.
