March 21, 2025 – In a landmark move for the maritime industry, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and global shipping powerhouse CMA CGM have strengthened their collaboration by renewing their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic agreement aims to accelerate sustainability efforts, enhance digitalization, and reinforce maritime innovation.
The renewed partnership builds on their initial 2022 agreement, reinforcing their joint commitment to driving decarbonization, digital transformation, and talent development within the shipping sector.
CMA CGM Expands Fleet Under Singapore Flag
As part of the MoU, CMA CGM will expand its fleet registered under the Singapore flag, including the addition of four 23,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels. This move strengthens Singapore’s position as a key global maritime hub while aligning with CMA CGM’s ambitious net-zero carbon target by 2050.
Massive Investment in Low-Carbon Shipping
To drive maritime decarbonization, CMA CGM has committed $20 billion toward acquiring LNG- and methanol-powered vessels. By 2029, the company plans to operate 153 ships utilizing alternative fuels, such as:
- Biogas and biomethanol
- Synthetic fuels
- Next-generation low-emission energy sources
CMA CGM’s first dual-fuel methanol vessel, the CMA CGM Iron, recently made its maiden call in Singapore, marking a milestone in the adoption of alternative fuels.
Advancing Digitalization and Cybersecurity in Shipping
Beyond sustainability, the MoU also prioritizes digitalization and maritime cybersecurity. Key initiatives include:
- Developing an online carbon accounting registry
- Implementing real-time data exchange between ships and shore-based operations
- Strengthening cybersecurity measures across maritime networks
By integrating advanced digital solutions, CMA CGM and MPA are leading the charge in modernizing global trade logistics.
Innovation and Talent Development at the Core
The renewed agreement also aims to foster maritime innovation through collaborations with industry leaders such as:
- ZEBOX Group, CMA CGM’s innovation incubator
- PIER71™, a Singapore-based maritime innovation hub
In parallel, CMA CGM will work with the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) to develop specialized training programs for seafarers, ensuring they are equipped to operate the next generation of low-carbon vessels.
Leadership Perspectives on the Future of Shipping
Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, underscored the importance of this partnership:
“This MoU is a testament to our shared vision for a greener, smarter, and more resilient maritime sector. By collaborating with CMA CGM, we are driving innovation and investing in a sustainable shipping future.”
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, reaffirmed the company’s commitment:
“Renewing our partnership with MPA is an important step toward strengthening Singapore’s role as a global maritime hub. Our investment in alternative fuels, digitalization, and operational efficiency reflects our commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient global trade network.”
Reshaping the Future of Global Maritime Trade
With sustainability and digitalization at the forefront, this renewed partnership between MPA and CMA CGM is poised to reshape the future of global maritime trade. The collaboration will not only reduce carbon emissions but also enhance operational efficiencies, ensuring the shipping industry remains resilient amid evolving environmental and technological challenges.
