Swissport has expanded its cargo handling network in Eastern Europe with the opening of a new cargo facility at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport in Bulgaria.
The warehouse provides 2,200 square metres of operational space, including 2,000 square metres dedicated to cargo storage, and is located just 80 metres from the apron to accelerate aircraft turnaround times.
The facility is designed to handle a wide range of shipments including general cargo, pharmaceuticals, perishables, e-commerce shipments and specialised cargo such as live animals and valuables.
Temperature-controlled zones allow for the storage of cool, frozen and controlled room temperature (CRT) cargo, ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical and perishables logistics requirements.
Swissport’s global cargo chairman Dirk Goovaerts said the project reinforces the company’s commitment to strengthening regional logistics infrastructure.
“Bulgaria’s strategic location in Southeast Europe makes Sofia an important gateway for regional trade flows,” Goovaerts said.
The facility integrates Swissport’s digital cargo management platform, enabling real-time shipment visibility, automated documentation processing and integrated customs clearance.
Security features include X-ray screening systems, CCTV monitoring, a secure vault and a fenced yard of approximately 2,000 square metres, which supports road feeder service operations.
Swissport currently operates 122 cargo warehouses in 31 countries, handling more than 5.2 million tonnes of cargo annually.
