Orient Overseas Container Line has officially named its first 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship, introducing the world’s largest vessel of its type.

The OOCL Wisdom was named on May 8 at Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering in China during a ceremony led by Cao Yanping, Director of Fujian Yaohua Industrial Village Development.

With a capacity of 24,168 TEU, the OOCL Wisdom becomes the largest methanol dual-fuel container ship ever built. Its main engines, auxiliary engines, and boilers are all equipped with methanol dual-fuel systems.

The vessel is the first in a series of seven newbuildings ordered by OOCL.

Tao Weidong, Chief Executive Officer of OOCL, said the delivery represents both a major expansion of the company’s fleet and a clear demonstration of its commitment to low-carbon development, digitalization, and sustainability.

The company said the arrival of large, modern, and highly efficient vessels will support continued fleet growth while improving operational performance.

OOCL also expects the new vessels to help build a greener, more efficient, and more intelligent shipping network with broader global coverage.

The naming of OOCL Wisdom comes as methanol continues to gain momentum as one of the most closely watched alternative fuels in container shipping.

For major carriers, investment in dual-fuel vessels has become a central part of long-term fleet strategy as environmental regulations tighten and customers demand more sustainable logistics solutions.
