Tesla is preparing to expand its Texas footprint with a new distribution center near Austin, according to a September filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The automotive and technology manufacturer expects to invest just over $1.4 million in the 538,720-square-foot facility. Construction is scheduled to begin on December 7, with the project targeting completion in December 2028.
The development would involve a new lease-space build-out within an existing structure, rather than the construction of an entirely new building.
Tesla has not provided additional details about the planned facility. The company currently operates 135 delivery centers across the U.S., with most located in California and Florida. None of those delivery centers are currently located in Texas.
Tesla’s delivery footprint in the state is also shaped by Texas motor vehicle sales franchise laws, which make the company’s distribution and sales model different from that used elsewhere in the country.
Texas becomes increasingly important to Tesla and SpaceX
The planned distribution center comes as Texas continues to grow in importance for Tesla and its affiliated businesses.
SpaceX, founded and led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is in the early stages of developing a 100-million-square-foot semiconductor manufacturing campus north of Houston. The planned site is expected to manufacture chips for both SpaceX and Tesla, including components intended for autonomous vehicles, robotics and satellite data centers.
SpaceX is investing $16.8 million in the first of four development phases for the project, known as the Terafab manufacturing facility.
Musk said in March that the eventual facility would be capable of producing 1 trillion watts of computing power per year, highlighting the scale of the semiconductor ambitions behind the Texas development.
Together, the distribution center and the broader semiconductor expansion illustrate the growing role Texas is expected to play in Tesla’s manufacturing, technology and logistics operations.
