Vancouver Community College (VCC) has officially launched a new set of construction electrician training programs aimed at responding to the growing need for skilled electrical workers across British Columbia.

The initiative marks a first for B.C.’s post-secondary system, with VCC introducing a new training model designed to create a more streamlined route through technical education while allowing apprentices to remain connected to the workplace.

The need for electricians is expected to remain strong in the years ahead. More than 5,000 electrician job openings are projected across British Columbia over the next decade. At the same time, many employers are reporting difficulties when it comes to filling entry-level apprentice positions.

According to the release, 32 per cent of employers say they cannot find apprentices, while 24 per cent point to the supervision demands involved in apprenticeship training. Another 23 per cent say they do not have the ability to provide work in the format required by traditional apprentice block training.

To address some of these challenges, VCC is applying the Modernized Apprenticeship Pathway (MAP) teaching model to its construction electrician programs. The model was developed with industry experts and is designed to give students more flexible, work-integrated routes toward Red Seal certification.

At the foundation level, VCC’s six-month Construction Electrician Foundation certificate combines 350 hours of work-based training with Level 1 Red Seal electrical training.

Students can then progress through VCC’s Level 2, 3 and 4 apprenticeship courses while remaining with their employers, rather than leaving the workplace for extended periods. The training covers essential electrical skills, including the installation, maintenance and repair of residential and commercial electrical systems.

For industry representatives, the new format could provide a more practical connection between classroom learning and day-to-day work.

“The traditional 10-week schooling model takes apprentices away from the job for an extended period, and many struggle with that, both financially and in staying connected to their employer. What MAP offers is different. Learning gets applied almost immediately, which is when it truly sticks. I believe this model will benefit apprentices, employers, and the trade as a whole,” said Dan Wormald of Leading Edge Electric.

VCC’s Construction Electrician Foundation certificate currently has spaces available for the May and September 2027 intakes.

Places in the Construction Electrician apprenticeship courses are also available throughout 2027, giving students the opportunity to continue their technical training while staying in employment.
