Volvo Trucks North America has launched a new service contract to help fleets better manage the cost of major truck repairs. The Silver Service Contract, announced Monday at the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in Charlotte, North Carolina, expands the company’s Blue Service Contract to include engine, aftertreatment system, transmission and clutch repairs.
The launch comes as trucking operators face continued pressure from maintenance costs. Truck repair and maintenance costs rose 8.6% in 2025 to 21.5 cents per mile, compared with 19.8 cents in 2024, according to the American Transportation Research Institute’s 2026 Analysis of the Operational Costs of Trucking.
“Maintenance and powertrain repairs are some of the least predictable costs that fleet operators face,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. The Silver plan bundles these costs into a single monthly payment, reducing the uncertainty of unexpected mechanical failures while providing better financial visibility.
The contract is available via Volvo’s network of nearly 400 authorized dealers in the United States and Canada. It is available on the all-new VNL and VNR truck models.
Increasing Blue’s preventative maintenance coverage
With Volvo’s Blue Service Contract, it’s all about doing preventive maintenance. It uses data from connected vehicles and artificial intelligence to determine when a particular truck needs service. Instead of fixed maintenance intervals, schedules are adapted to each vehicle’s operating conditions.
The calculations include fuel consumption, transport cycle, gross combination weight, engine idle time and terrain, says Volvo’s Silver sales sheet.
Silver keeps these connected maintenance offerings but adds coverage for powertrain repairs. It also includes some of the additional driveline components and the wear-able clutch lining kit.
The contract also aims to make workshop visits more efficient. If a truck breaks down and needs to be repaired, any preventative maintenance that is due can be done at the same time, possibly eliminating the need to make separate service appointments.
Depending on the mileage indicated in the contract, scheduled maintenance can include valve clearance adjustments, cleaning of the diesel particulate filter, flush of the diesel exhaust fluid tank and oil changes for the transmission and rear axle.
Silver is the next tier above Blue in Volvo’s service contract lineup. Gold is the company’s full-service package, available on the VNR Electric.
Contract pricing and coverage details remain undisclosed
Despite the additional repair protection, Volvo has not released the Silver Service Contract’s pricing or specified its contract durations. The company has also not clarified whether mileage limits apply or explained how the new coverage interacts with the standard truck warranty.
Additional services may be available depending on the dealer and location. These options include annual Department of Transportation inspections, truck washing, on-site maintenance, and vehicle pickup and delivery.
Their availability and terms vary across the network, meaning fleets will need to confirm the services offered by their local dealer before selecting a contract.
Monthly payments and dedicated fleet management
Operators financing their trucks through Volvo Financial Services can incorporate the Silver Service Contract into their vehicle payments. This arrangement allows customers to spread the contract cost across the financing period without additional interest on the bundled service coverage, according to Volvo.
Each customer is also assigned a Volvo Fleet Manager through a certified dealership. The manager uses data transmitted by connected trucks to plan preventive maintenance and coordinates service campaigns, recalls and over-the-air software updates.
Volvo’s connected-vehicle infrastructure also supports remote software management. As of June, more than 80% of connected Volvo trucks were running the latest software, according to the company.
Support extends beyond a truck’s usual servicing location. If a vehicle breaks down away from its home dealer, the fleet manager coordinates with the dealer handling the repair through Volvo Action Service, Volvo’s 24-hour roadside assistance and service coordination network.
“The Volvo Fleet Manager becomes part of the customer’s team,” Voorhoeve said. “They know the fleet, they know what preventive service is due, and they handle it.”
Predictable repair costs become the key selling point
The Silver Service Contract gives fleets an alternative to absorbing the full financial impact of an unexpected major powertrain repair. By combining preventive maintenance, repair coverage and dealer-based fleet management in a monthly payment, Volvo is seeking to make operating expenses easier to anticipate.
That proposition comes at a time when repair and maintenance costs are rising across the trucking industry. With expenses increasing 8.6% in 2025, the ability to limit exposure to expensive mechanical failures could appeal to operators seeking greater cost stability.
However, the contract’s commercial value will depend on its final pricing, mileage conditions and coverage terms. Until Volvo discloses those details, fleets will have to weigh the benefit of transferring some repair-cost risk against the price of securing that protection.
