The Government of British Columbia is investing $49.5 million to expand classroom capacity across the province, helping schools keep up with growing student enrolment.
The funding will support the construction of more than 30 new classrooms, creating 820 additional student spaces through a series of prefabricated school expansion projects in five communities.
The investment includes new classroom additions at Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary and Josette Dandurand Elementary in Langley, Dormick Park Elementary in Abbotsford, Black Mountain Elementary in Kelowna and Highlands Elementary in North Vancouver.
Together, the projects will add 200 new seats at Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary, 100 seats at Josette Dandurand Elementary, 145 seats at Dormick Park Elementary, 200 seats at Black Mountain Elementary and 100 seats at Highlands Elementary.
The province also announced that Lakes Learning Centre in Burns Lake will be replaced with a new school. The project is intended to resolve structural issues affecting the current building while improving accessibility for students and staff.
According to the provincial government, the projects are part of a broader effort to respond more quickly to rising enrolment by using innovative construction methods, including prefabricated buildings and standardized school designs.
While prefabricated classrooms are assembled differently from traditional buildings, they are permanent facilities that meet the same construction standards. Because much of the work is completed before arriving on site, they can often be delivered faster and at a lower cost than conventional construction.
The province says this approach allows new learning spaces to open sooner, giving rapidly growing communities access to the classrooms they need without compromising on quality or durability.
As student populations continue to rise in British Columbia, officials say prefabricated construction is a practical long-term solution that can help schools expand more efficiently, while ensuring students have access to modern, permanent learning environments.
