DOF sells cable-layer to South Korean buyer

Norwegian offshore vessel owner DOF has agreed to sell one of its cable-laying vessels, the Skandi Connector, to South Korean cable manufacturer Taihan Cable & Solution, marking a strategic reshaping of its subsea fleet portfolio.  Built in 2016, the Skandi Connector will become the second cable-laying vessel in Taihan’s fleet, alongside the 2010-built Palos, and will also make Taihan only the second operator of such vessels in South Korea....

When algorithms start reading the crew: emotion AI reaches shipping

A recent essay in The Atlantic warned that so-called “emotion AI” is increasingly appearing in workplaces, with systems claiming to interpret human feelings through facial expressions, voice patterns and even keyboard behaviour. The question now being raised is whether this same technology could eventually find its way into shipping.  Over the past decade, maritime operations have become heavily digitised. Ships are tracked via AIS, engines are monitored through sensors, and port equipment is increasingly managed through cameras and connected systems. The next step being explored by some researchers and technology providers is more sensitive: applying similar tools to people themselves.  That would mean monitoring crew members’ mood, stress levels or...

Norwegian battery specialist Corvus Energy and BYD Energy Storage have taken a step further in their collaboration, signing a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation battery systems for the maritime sector.  The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed late last year, which first set the framework for joint work on marine battery technologies.
