Menzies Aviation has launched a proof-of-concept trial of artificial intelligence and computer vision technology at its cargo operation at London Heathrow Airport, working with computer vision specialist CIND.

The trial is designed to assess how automated cargo measurement, real-time operational visibility and automated build-up checks can improve the handling process from the moment freight arrives at the warehouse through to aircraft loading.

The initiative forms part of Menzies Aviation’s broader focus on digitalisation, operational excellence and continuous improvement across its cargo network.

Automated measurement during cargo intake

During the first phase of the trial, Menzies is deploying CIND’s Dimensioner In-Motion system.

The technology automatically measures freight as it moves through the warehouse without requiring shipments to be stopped or manually handled.

It captures information including pallet dimensions, weight, stackability and shipment references at the cargo intake stage.

By automating the collection of this information, the system is intended to reduce manual data entry, minimize errors and provide more consistent information for downstream operational planning.

More accurate data at the beginning of the handling process can also help teams plan warehouse flows and aircraft loads more effectively.

Real-time checks during ULD build-up

Menzies is also testing CIND’s ContourCheck technology during Unit Load Device (ULD) build-up.

The system generates a real-time visual model of cargo as it is loaded onto a ULD and compares the build-up against the approved aircraft contour.

This allows operators to identify potential contour and overhang problems at an early stage, before they become last-minute loading issues.

The technology is expected to support safer aircraft loading, improve the use of available ULD space and reduce the need for late adjustments.

Together, Dimensioner In-Motion and ContourCheck are designed to improve warehouse efficiency, loading accuracy and ULD capacity utilization while giving cargo teams greater confidence in the quality and availability of shipment data.

Heathrow trial could support wider rollout

The proof-of-concept at Heathrow will allow Menzies Aviation to evaluate the operational benefits of the technologies before considering broader deployment across its cargo network.

Rory Fidler, Senior Vice President Cargo Technology at Menzies Aviation, said innovation is central to the company’s approach to developing its cargo operations.

“ This proof-of-concept deployment with CIND gives us the opportunity to test how reliable, real-time data can transform the way we plan, load and manage cargo,” Fidler said.

He added that the results of the pilot will help Menzies determine whether the technology can be applied more widely, with potential benefits including safer operations, more effective capacity utilization and improved decision-making.

Marcus Schelin, CEO of CIND, said the partnership with Menzies Aviation represents an important step in the company’s international expansion.

“Our solutions are proven and established in the market,” Schelin said.

He added that the Heathrow deployment provides an opportunity to demonstrate the technology’s operational value while supporting safer, more efficient and data-driven air cargo handling.

If successful, the trial could provide Menzies Aviation with a foundation for expanding automated measurement and computer vision technology across additional cargo operations.
