One of the most recognised voices in container shipping journalism is entering a new phase of his career.

Peter Tirschwell has stepped down from his role at the Journal of Commerce after 34 years, choosing to continue his career as an independent shipping journalist.

Over more than three decades at the publication, Tirschwell became a central figure in the coverage and analysis of global container shipping, helping shape how industry developments were reported and interpreted across the sector.

Beyond his editorial work, he is also known for founding TPM 25 years ago in Long Beach, California. The event has since grown into one of the largest annual gatherings in container shipping, bringing together thousands of professionals from across the global supply chain.

Reflecting on his career, Tirschwell described the journey as both “wildly fulfilling and adventurous,” noting that it began in 1992 when he first joined the Journal of Commerce newsroom at 2 World Trade Center as a young reporter.

His departure marks the end of an era for one of the most influential editorial voices in maritime and container logistics reporting, while also signalling a shift toward independent commentary after a career spent closely tracking the evolution of global trade.
