UPS is expanding the reach of its reverse logistics services through a new integration between its Happy Returns subsidiary and TikTok Shop. The partnership allows retailers selling through the social commerce platform to offer consumers a return process that does not require shipping boxes or printed labels.
The integration gives shoppers the option to initiate a return directly through TikTok Shop and select Happy Returns as their preferred method. Customers can then drop off their purchases at one of approximately 10,000 Return Bars across the United States. These locations include participating stores such as The UPS Store, Ulta Beauty and Staples.
Once the items have been handed over, they are consolidated at the drop-off locations and transported through UPS’s logistics network before being returned to the respective sellers.
Among the retailers already adopting the service are Everlane, Windsor and Pacsun. For Pacsun, the integration is intended to ensure that the post-purchase experience matches the convenience of shopping through social media.
“TikTok Shop is where our community shops, scrolls and shares in real time, and we want their returns experience to feel just as effortless,” said Shirley Gao, Pacsun’s chief digital and information officer, in the announcement.
A response to the growing cost of merchandise returns
The partnership comes as retailers and online marketplaces seek more convenient ways to manage merchandise returns, a process involving hundreds of billions of dollars in products annually. Consumers were expected to return nearly $850 billion worth of merchandise in 2025, according to the National Retail Federation.
As return volumes increase, businesses are looking for solutions that improve the customer experience while reducing the costs associated with processing returned goods.
For TikTok Shop, integrating Happy Returns is intended to make the process “faster, hassle free, and more trustworthy,” according to Patrick Nommensen, the platform’s president of strategic initiatives.
The service is available to retailers regardless of whether they manage order fulfillment themselves or rely on TikTok’s own fulfillment services. However, the implementation process differs depending on the model used.
For merchants fulfilling orders independently, Happy Returns provides guidance to help them establish the service. Birdie Smith, Happy Returns’ head of sales, explained during a webinar about the partnership that the solution is particularly suited to sellers processing approximately 10,000 or more returns annually, especially in apparel, footwear and accessories.
For orders handled through Fulfilled by TikTok, merchants do not need to complete a separate setup process. Retailers already using Happy Returns can activate the TikTok Shop service through the platform’s Seller Center.
A first for Happy Returns on a social commerce platform
The agreement arrives several months ahead of the post-holiday period, when retailers typically face a significant increase in returned purchases.
It also represents a milestone for Happy Returns: according to the company, this is the first time its service has been integrated directly into a platform such as TikTok Shop, rather than being offered through individual retailers’ websites.
The announcement also identifies Happy Returns as TikTok Shop’s only available returns option that eliminates the need for both a shipping box and a printed label.
The move places UPS in a stronger position within the social commerce returns market, where logistics providers are competing to make reverse logistics more efficient. FedEx, a major UPS rival, offers its own competing solution, Easy Returns, which launched in 2025.
David Sobie, co-founder and CEO of Happy Returns, said the collaboration would extend the company’s presence in a rapidly expanding commerce ecosystem while helping merchants manage returns at scale.
“Our TikTok Shop partnership brings Happy Returns into one of the fastest-growing commerce ecosystems, giving greater confidence at purchase while supporting the fraud-resistant, scalable returns infrastructure merchants need to grow,” Sobie said in the announcement.
By connecting TikTok Shop directly with its returns network, UPS is seeking to make the process easier for consumers while providing merchants with infrastructure designed to handle growing e-commerce volumes and the operational challenges associated with returned merchandise.
